St Maarten on a Budget-What Groups Should Know Before You Land
A lot of the groups we see — bachelorette trips, girls’ getaways, friend reunions — are booking tight 3 or 4 day windows and making it happen on a real budget. That’s exactly the kind of trip St Maarten is great for. It’s also exactly the kind of trip where a few surprise costs can eat into money you were planning to spend on the fun part. Here’s what actually catches people off guard, and how to avoid it.
There’s no Uber. At all.
This is the biggest one, and it surprises almost everyone. Uber, Lyft, Bolt — none of them operate here; the island has kept ride-share apps out to protect the local taxi industry. Airport taxis have transparent, government-regulated fixed rates, so that first ride to your villa or hotel is predictable. Outside the airport, though, taxis don’t run on meters — you negotiate the price before you get in, every time. A one-way ride from Orient Bay to Grand Case can run $20–25. Multiply that by a group, a few times a day, over 3–4 days, and it adds up fast.
The fix: if your group is going to want to move around a lot, price out a rental car for the whole trip before you land — for anything past a couple of days, it’s often cheaper than repeated taxi rides, and it removes the negotiating entirely. If you’re staying closer to home base, look into the public minibuses (PSVs) for short hops — just a couple dollars a ride.
Eat where the island eats, not just where the resort points you
Restaurants right at the airport, the cruise port, or inside a resort tend to carry real markups. The island’s “lolos” — open-air, family-run BBQ spots — are a genuine local tradition, not just a budget hack, and they’ll stretch a group’s food budget a lot further than a hotel dinner will. If your villa or Airbnb has a kitchenette, grabbing groceries for even a couple of meals can meaningfully change what a 4-day trip actually costs.
Watch for taxes and service charges added after the fact
A quoted rate — for a taxi, a tour, a room — doesn’t always include government taxes and service charges, and those get tacked on at the end. Ask directly whether a price you’re given is the final number before you agree to anything, especially with a group where a small per-person surprise turns into a real total.
The best things to do here are already free
All the beaches are public and free — Maho Beach for plane-spotting, Great Bay right in Philipsburg, and plenty of quieter ones if your group wants to split off for a while. Hiking Pic Paradis or Fort Amsterdam costs nothing and comes with some of the best views on the island. Pick one or two paid excursions you actually care about and let the free stuff fill in the rest of the days.
Where a group massage actually saves you money
This is the one we know firsthand: when a group books separately at a spa, everyone’s paying their own transport there and back, tipping separately, and losing real vacation hours to the trip. Booking one mobile session for the whole group — everyone in the same villa, at the same time — cuts all of that out. It’s also priced for groups specifically, not stacked as several individual bookings, which matters when everyone’s watching their spend on a short trip.
